Core Values: The Gospel

Our first core value reads: We are unashamedly committed to the Gospel. The Gospel has formed us; it sustains us, and motivates all we do as a church. This is why we began our recent core values series with the Gospel. It is the message of first importance and it shapes all of life and ministry at Sovereign Grace Church. The Gospel should color the way we look at the world and it should color the way we look at life in the church.

The Gospel is not only news for a perishing world, it is the message that forms, sustains, and animates the church. Apart from the Gospel, the church has nothing to say-that is, nothing to say that cannot be said by some other human agency. The Gospel distinguishes the church from the world, defines her message and mission in the world, and steels her people against the fiery darts of the evil one and the false allurements of sin. The Gospel is absolutely vital to a vibrant, joyous, persevering, hopeful, and healthy Christian and Christian church. So essential is the Gospel to the Christian life that we need to be saturated in it in order to be healthy church members. - Thabiti Anayabwile

The Gospel is the power of God. It saves everyone who believes. Take a moment to remember how it has changed you. What were you like before the power of God changed you? What were your passions? Nothing short of the message of Christ and Him crucified can account for the change in your life.

We are passionate about the Gospel because Jesus Christ is the head of the church. Not only is He the head of the church, He is the head of Sovereign Grace Church. He is far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name. There is nothing outside his control or presence that he does not rule over.

The church is the community which Christ, in whom God's fullness dwells, now indwells, filling it up, as it were, with his presence, flooding it with his grace, conforming it to his image until it is filled with his likeness. - Sinclair Ferguson

The fullness of God dwells in Christ...Christ, being the head of the church, now indwells the church filling us up with his presence, flooding us with his grace, conforming us to his image. This is simply overwhelming for those who were once God's enemies.

The gospel is not just the thing that marks the beginning of the Christian life; it's meant to dominate the Christian life. The message of Jesus Christ and him crucified is meant to remain central to all that we do personally. It's meant to govern, inform and motivate our marriages, our parenting, our vocation, our friendships, our entertainment, and our evangelism.

Have you grown content with your understanding of the gospel? Have you moved on? Have you become distracted by something else and allowed for it to push the Gospel away from the center?

We never, therefore, move on from the cross of Christ-only into a more profound understanding of the cross. - David Pryor

It's or goal here at Sovereign Grace Church to keep the Gospel at the heart of all we do. By God's grace we will do all that we can to ensure that our passion for the gospel in never eclipsed by any other ministry, doctrine, or practice. May God and His faithfulness keep us to that end.
